RelativeVolumeStDev Scanner

Hello Hahn,

One of the greatest volume studies in thinkorswim is the RelativeVolumeStDev.

However, this isn’t an option when selecting for scan criteria.

Essentially, this scan should work just like the default chart study and pick up data shown in the screenshot here.

The scan should pick up when the volume is at or above the StDevLevel (The critical level.)

This scan can be easily constructed using the condition wizard. Screenshot below shows how to build the condition for the RelativeVolumeStDev study.

Thank you, is it just me or are all TOS scanners acting weird today? I was getting no data premarket and my scans seem off their game but have all been working perfectly before

Yes, the scan engine is broken today. I reported this to support at TD Ameritrade. Whenever you think scans are acting odd. Build a simple scan like this: “plot scan = close > 0;”

That scan should return every single stock in the watchlists you have selected for “Scan In”. So for example if I run this against the public watchlist of “S&P 500” it should return all 500 stocks. Just a few minutes ago, it was returning zero stocks. So it is certainly broken.

I see, my next question is if i have a scan that is meant to capture stocks at HOD prices on 2x relative volume  aka a HOD momentum scan.

This is manly is to capture moves on the 1 minute chart.

It seems on the back end that TOS runs only scans every 5-10 minutes then it sends alerts.  If this is true, do you believe this type of scan will be effective in TOS?

Or would I have to continue to keep hitting the SCAN BUTTON for the scan to keep refreshing latest results?

Best

The only thing that Thinkorswim handles well at 1 and 3 min time frames is charting. Everything else is completely inadequate at those time frames. If it is important to your trading success, switch to a more advanced platform.

you Sir are indeed correct. Just a general question, have you ever faced lag or “waiting for results” endless looping when scanning?
